| History of Music & Arts The first Music & Arts was located in a small house in Bethesda, Maryland, and run by founder Benjamin O'Brien. That first store offered music lessons, music and art supplies plus dance lessons - thus the name Music & Arts. Since its beginning in 1952, the company gradually expanded outside the MD/VA area, adding nearly 100 retail stores in 20 states. Where are we today? Music & Arts, a division of Guitar Center, is the largest musical instrument retailer in the United States. Our focus is beginning musicians with an interest in band & orchestra instruments.
