Not just a pretty face

By Robert Dietrich from Norfolk, VA on 5/17/2011 4:21:57 PM

I recently purchased an MA-500 and it is a beautiful sounding instrument with a deep, dark and rich sound. It has tremendous resonance and volume for an intermediate viola and easily compares to advanced level instruments. If you decide to purchase this instrument, make sure you try several as the quality varied greatly from one instrument to another.

Good one-month use!

By Anna King from Chicago, IL on 7/26/2011 5:21:27 PM

I got this viola about two years ago. I've been playing for five years now. I first got this viola and it was great! The case was beautiful, with blue velvet and a lot of psace for my shoulder rest, rosin, and rag. The instrument itself was beautiful also. It was a nice color withy an elegant tone. After about a month or two having the instrument (I play it every single day) I did have a few problems. First of all, the strings kept unraveling. After replacing each of the strings three times within a month, I took it to the repair man. He did an excellent joob trying to solve the problem. He even filled in some scratches I had with the finish. In the end, the problem was that the slots for the strings to sit in were not big enough, causing too much friction for the string to handle, therefore causing it to unravel. The next problem I had was the case is outragously heavy!! I compared it to a fellow orchestral friend's cello and hers inher case was lighter than my viola in my case. That wasn't the worst part. Since the weight of the case was so great, the pressure started causing the handle to go out, and again, I had to take it back to the shop. He fixed it, yet it was still unsturdy. The the felt handle broke to which I could on rely on the plastic one. Mabey four months ago the inside of my case, the two storage things came unstapled. I fixed one on my own doing, and I gave up on the other. I also had to replace the strings again recently, but weall know that is a yearly thing. Overall I would recomend it to mabye a player who doesn't play EVERY single day for at least an hour. However, it is a great instrument.
