Give them a try

By michael from Pittsburgh, PA on 1/26/2012 1:37:01 PM

As the principal clarinetist in the Pittsburgh Symphony, I need the best reeds available, period. I played V-12's for years. True, a good Vandoren is a great reed. But Rico has improved so much recently, that I have now switched. They are more consistent, they have a smooth sound, and when they break in (allow a slightly longer break in period), they last a long time. Fact is, we now have options!! They are worth a try. You might not like them as much as what you are currently playing, but you might like them more. My advice, try the equivalent V-12 strength and also one step stronger (I played V12 #4, and Rico 4+) and decide which work better. Happy playing!

Better, but not quite there yet

By Jennifer from Houston, TX on 2/15/2011 10:44:28 PM

The Rico Reserve, as promised, is better than the standard Rico reed, which while a standard of beginner bands because of affordability, has lacked real quality or consistency. The Reserve line is more consistent, but carries a brighter sound than comparable Vandorens. This would probably serve just fine in jazz ensembles, but the darker concert sound might be a problem. Also, if you are used to playing on Vandoren reeds, choose a Reserve a step harder, as they tend to run soft.
