Roland Fantom-G6 Workstation Keyboard

The Roland Fantom-G6 Workstation is a dream keyboard instrument that redefines the boundaries of playability and creativity. Advanced sound engine, revolutionary ARX SuperNATURAL™ expansion bay, large-sized color LCD, powerful new audio/MIDI sequencer, first-class "Ivory Feel" weighted keys and more make the Fantom-G6 a keyboard to contend with.

Advanced Sound Engine

Driven by a powerful new audio processor, the Roland Fantom-G6 provides new sonic depth and versatility. With twice the wave-ROM capacity of its predecessor, the Fantom G6 contains a treasure trove of Roland's world-famous SRX-quality sounds. But what really sets the Fantom-G6 apart is its new ARX expansion, which allows additional SuperNATURAL sound-sets and fully dedicated synth and effects engines to be added to this already powerful live workstation.

SuperNATURAL™ ARX Expansion

Fantom-G6 provides ARX slots that accommodate two SuperNATURAL expansion boards. SuperNATURAL is Roland's unique behavior-modeling technology that enables a new level of organic, emotional expression previously unattainable in synthesizers. Applied to traditional-instrument sounds, SuperNATURAL enables the delicate, organic tonal changes and playing nuances of real musical instruments. It's also a powerful tool for electronic and non-traditional sounds, breathing amazing new life and expression into synthesis.

Power Sequencer Onboard

The Fantom-G is the first Roland instrument to feature Roland's newly designed power sequencer. In conjunction with the large-size LCD, this pro-level composition tool provides 128 tracks (including 24 audio tracks) in a fully integrated audio/MIDI graphical environment. A mouse can be also incorporated for computer-like speed and ease. Other convenient features include combo XLR and TRS connector, phantom power for condenser mics, Hi-Z input for guitar and bass, and line input.

Luxurious Extra-Wide LCD

One look and touch and you'll know that the Fantom-G is an instrument without equal. Only the highest-quality materials have been used to create this dream synth, with a stylish, futuristic design that will turn heads. Front and center is the extra-large 8.5" wide TFT color LCD for enhanced productivity. A first-class assortment of hands- on controls is provided as well, including eight sliders, four knobs, and ten buttons below the LCD.

Amazing FX

Fantom-G is loaded with a state-of-the-art effects engine, with multi-effects available for each Fantom-G sound/part. In 16-part multi-timbre mode, up to 22 effect routings can be used simultaneously. Create complex setups with 16 insert effects per multitimbral patch group, plus global reverbs and choruses. Mastering effects are provided for polishing songs created with the onboard sequencer.

Fantom Series

By Geoffrey T. Uhal from Cumming, GA on 2/15/2011 10:46:59 PM

I give it a 4 star rating because of the complicated nature of working around in the keyboard. Sound wise and everything else it deserves 5 stars, but it will take the novice user a good couple of weeks to get comfortable with it. There is a huge, wide range of available sounds in this keyboard. The range includes classical sounds, instrument section sounds, everyday occurrence sounds, and genre specific sounds for hip hop, techno, etc. The classical sounds in this powerful engine are very impressive. The G6 is the 61 key equivalent of the G8. This series is the next step in the line of Fantom Series X. The range of sounds is impressive. Some people complain that the driver in this keyboard is not as powerful as the previous X series, but I've used both extensively and have not noticed any degradation in the quality of sound. The only sounds that I think could be improved are the vocal tones. The pipe organs, FX orans, strings, and woodwinds are all phenomenal. The brass sections (which are arguably the hardest to create effective synthetic voices of) are pretty outstanding in the line of workstations. There are an innumerable amount of sounds to chose from, including the normal range of classical instruments and a pretty standard (though quite large) series of useful sounds that are all very accurate. So much more than just a keyboard, this is a workstation that you can compose entire pieces on, using samples and external recording to put into the mix as well. As far as my personal application of the instrument, I used it for recording into a 24 track recorder using the direct out to augment some of our band's songs. The quality of the output is in my opinion very difficult to match. There are a great number of real time changes you can make, and you can save all of your personal preferences for live performances. A little overwhelming at first, the included instruction manual can be a bit confusing. It may take some users a few re-reads to ensure that they are in fact looking at the right page to describe what they are trying to do. The book does not do a good job of explaining what different workstation procedures are, so people used to other systems may have issues with that. That is the biggest grievance I personally have with the system: Its too complicated to not have an extremely detailed manual, and its not as intuitive as one might suspect. But, in terms of power, and in terms of reliability, and in terms of performance value, its exceptional. In all honesty, all the high end keyboards (the flagships of their respective companies) are going to be pretty on par with each other to make viable competition, but this one excels in the amount of stuff it has to offer in terms of different sounds, the ability to mix them together, and the ability to personalize every single one of them. So if you're a patient musician that wants the top of the line Roland model, this is the way to go.
