Schilke Standard Large Shank Trombone Mouthpiece in Silver

The Schike large shank trombone mouthpiece is among the most popular, well-reviewed mouthpieces in the world. They fit commonly into what are sometimes called symphony tenors, that is to say horns with a .547" bore. These are also common in the band world, and are the most common size among orchestral players. Some jazzers use a big horn too. Bass bones, .560" bore like a Bach 50, accept large shank mouthpieces as well.

Schilke 51 (and 51D)

By Tim B. from Portland, Maine on 1/31/2014 8:37:07 PM

I picked up a Schilke 51 and 51D to compare against my Bach 5G, looking for a richer, more full sound (I play a Conn 88HO and the Bach mouthpieces had too 'focused' of a sound for me). After many trials, I've ended up on the 51 as the inner rim diameter is ever so slightly larger than the 51D (and larger still over the 5G) that my low range speaks quite nicely without much, if any, sacrifice of the high register. The extra "darkness" that the 51D adds is very subtle and, to me, not worth losing the better "grab" on the low range the 51 gives. That said, I'm still going to hang on the 51D, because you never know when it might come in handy.
