Yamaha YAS-82Z Custom Z Series Alto Saxophone

Yamaha developed the YAS-82Z Custom Z Series Alto Saxophone to be a sax capable of performing both classical and jazz music. The resulting YAS-82Z Custom alto saxophone will knock jazz sax players out with its projection and sweet tone. Classical saxophonists will appreciate the control the alto Yamaha YAS-82Z sax gives them over their tone from pianissimo to fortissimo.

The Yamaha YAS-82Z incorporates several features found on famous Yamaha saxophones of the past as well as offering many improvements on models such as the popular Yamaha YAS-62 saxophone. Yamaha engineers also maintained their consistently high build quality and the free-blowing nature that characterizes Yahama saxophones.

Yamaha's YAS-82Z captures the sound of popular vintage saxophones of the past, but adds the comfort of modern mechanisms and playability. The Yamaha Custom Z's body is made from a special brass alloy for a lighter weight saxophone and tonal flexibility only dreamt of until now. The saxophone's Custom G1 neck helps produce a quick and agile response, while key action and placement feel just right.

The Yamaha YAS-82Z saxophone boasts a 2-piece hydro-formed bell for durability and well-formed tone. The body, bell, and bow are annealed during production to increase the YAS-82Z saxophone's response and give it less air resistance. The new mechanisms on the Yamaha YAS-82Z sax mean faster action and they make adjustments easy while keeping repairs to a minimum.

Yamaha equips the YAS-82Z sax with blue steel springs for faster, more sensitive key response and higher resilience and durability. The beautiful Yamaha YAS-82Z saxophone's eye-catching engraving gives you the look of a custom horn. And there's even an available non-lacquered version for those who prefer that look.
Yamaha delivers the YAS-82Z sax with a newly designed lightweight case that includes a handy shoulder strap.

Fantastic instrument overall

By Ulrike Lorenz from Charlottesville, VA on 2/15/2011 10:43:44 PM

2 years ago, I bought this saxophone for my son, and he has been playing it since. From what he told me, I got this. This saxophone is well-made. The vibrant tone that comes from the instrument is very good, and the instrument is top level. A new instrument is very durable and should not need repairs for at the first six months, even if you play every day. This saxophone is perfect those ways. There are also one or two cons. Although this happens with all saxophones, residue and moisture collect on the pads of the keys while playing and crust once the instrument is put down for the day. This makes the pads very difficult to lift up at first, but is fixed after. A suggestion is asking for pad replacements for the G#, C#, and E keys, as they will stick tightly. The other thing to keep in mind is obviously the price, but this is a decision needing to be on a personal basis. This instrument is fabulous overall. Aesthetically, the sax is beautiful as well. It is very shiny and nice, and also has patterns on the bell. There is also an extra F# key on the saxophone near the alternate A# fingering. This alternate is OK. One also has the choice of playing the overtone to get a high F# or playing with a front fingering. The F# key itself is pretty good, other than that the note comes out insanely sharp and out of tune. The alternate key is great for non-group playing though, and allows one to play a 2-octave F# scale as well as other things. This instrument is a very high level, as well as expensive, advanced sax. I would not recommend to someone unless they are serious about their playing, and would really like to advance. That doesn't mean they have to practice 4 hours a day, 7 days a week, but that does mean the buyer should not still be deciding as to whether they are going to continue playing saxophone a year from now. If you are not as serious, I still think the 62 Yamaha is also great. I suggest going to your local Music and Arts to test out which instrument you find suits your taste best too. Overall though, I love my sax. It is a great beautiful instrument with an advanced range, amazing durability, as well as marvelous tone.

Excellent hig quality intrument

By A Girvin from Westerville, Ohio on 2/17/2011 12:36:57 PM

This saxophone is the second we have purchased for our son. He plays it regularly in jazz band and has been very happy with the sound quality and its performance. He is now in college and used this instrument for his band audition. It and he made a fine impression. I would recommend this series of saxophone for a high intermediate or even a professional player. It responds well and has a sweet sound. Not harsh or honky like many altos.

Phenomenal

By Laurette from NY on 2/18/2011 11:25:04 PM

My parents bought me this saxophone last year, and I absolutely love it. It is a great horn to play on and interchanges from both Classical and Jazz styles. As an experienced high school musician, I will use this saxophone throughout college. I am planning on majoring in Music Education and this saxophone will always be "top-notch" for me. I highly recommend this instrument!
