Yamaha YPG-235 76-Key Portable Grand Piano

If you're looking for a reasonably priced piano replacement, the YPG-235 is an excellent choice. It is the music student or professional musicians' answer to “I need more keys!” and a great solution for a keyboard that will grows with their needs of students. It features 76 non-weighted keys that not only look like piano keys but have a Graded Soft Touch (GST) action with different levels of resistance, making it easier for a budding musician to move to an acoustic or digital piano.

Full Keyboard Mode
The YPG-235 delivers on its piano theme with a special mode of fingering called Full Keyboard Mode. This allows you to play the keyboard like a piano; for example a chord with the right hand and bass notes with the left. When using the accompaniment feature, the virtual band will follow these chords. Traditional portable keyboards normally require you to chord on the left side of the keyboard, in the bass section, which is foreign to most piano players. However, the YPG-235 is also capable of this mode, for those who prefer or are used to it.

Yamaha Education Suite: Helps you learn to play
The YPG-235 has 30 built-in songs plus 70 more on included CD-ROM for you to learn to play using the Yamaha Education Suite. The songs are separated into left and right hand parts, providing 7 levels of lessons plus a convenient chord dictionary.

6-Track Sequencer
Imagine capturing your child's first performance or writing and recording your own songs. With the YPG-235, you have the equivalent of a built-in multi-track recorder to record one or multiple instrument parts at a time and assign each part to a different track. Six tracks are provided to accommodate sophisticated melodies, chord accompaniment and rhythm parts.

Computer Connectivity: USB and Flash ROM
Besides the 30 built-in songs and 70 more on the CD, the YPG-235 comes with the ability to connect to a computer via USB, so you can download more songs from the Internet into the internal Flash ROM (PC only), and use all of the Yamaha Education Suite features to help you learn to play them. Yamaha makes it easy to get connected with the new PC button. Now, instead of wading through function menus and fighting through a maze of selections, one button is your expressway to music on the web and your computer. In addition, once connected, you can play your songs into the computer (PC and Mac), edit them if necessary, and email them to your friends and family. And, with General MIDI (GM) and XGlite compatibility, song data always plays back with the correct sounds.

Ease of Operation
There are many tools in this keyboard that make it easy to be a power user from the first day you own the keyboard.
Expandable Music Database: Complete keyboard setups by song title. The keyboard selects an appropriate voice for the right hand melody, the correct musical style and the correct tempo. Simply call up a song title and start playing.

One Touch Setting (OTS): Provides you with a recommended voice with effects for each Style. For example, on a jazz style OTS might be piano, for a Latin style it might be acoustic guitar and for a rock style it might be a guitar with overdrive, etc.

Registration Memory: Set the keyboard up just the way you like and take a digital snapshot by memorizing it to one of the Registration buttons. Load and save up to 16 Registrations to User memory. The Registration buttons are conveniently located just above the keyboard.

Performance Assistant Technology: Performance assistant technology is a feature from Yamaha that guarantees that you can't play a wrong melody note or chord. Here's how it works. Select a song, press the Performance Assistant button Chord Mode, and play the keyboard – any notes you like. Every note you play will fit the music. If you move up the keyboard, the pitch goes up. If you move down, the pitch goes down. Play a perfect arpeggio, or play chords in time with the music, or really "go for it" and play a solo. As long as performance assistant is "on", you're "on".

Imagine being able to give a concert to your friends or relatives the very first day that you bring this keyboard home. Well, with the YPG-235 and performance assistant technology, you can. This keyboard is the first in the line to offer Chord/Free Mode in addition to Chord Mode described above. Chord/Free Mode allows those that have learned a melody with their right hand to have the keyboard correct the notes of their left hand. This allows you to concentrate on one hand at a time while learning. Play the correct notes with the right and any notes with the left and you're making beautiful music. In addition to working with any of the internal songs with chords, this feature also works with XF MIDI files.

32-Note Polyphony and 16-Part Multitimbral
In electronic keyboards, the more sounds made at the same time — polyphony — the more memory is needed. Obviously, more is always better, because too little polyphony can cause dropouts in dense passages of music. The YPG-235 has 32 notes of polyphony and will play back 16 different parts or sounds at once (16-part multitimbral); enough for the most demanding needs.

Digital Effects
Yamaha has long been a world leader in digital signal processing technology. In fact, Yamaha professional audio products are found in most professional recording studios around the world. The YPG-235 takes full advantage of this know-how, giving you an extensive range of nine, top-quality reverb effects that simulate playing in everything from a small room to a large spacious concert hall and four chorus effects that add richness to electric pianos and guitars in particular. You'll also find 26 types of Harmony effects for your melody part.

Auto Accompaniment Styles
In addition to the 100 songs mentioned above, the YPG-235 also has auto accompaniment styles that “follow” your playing. Simply select a style of music from the 160 built-in styles (example Rock) and start playing. The YPG-235 will create a backup band (bass, drums, strings, guitar, etc.) and “follow” you through the song. You can play your songs and try different genres of music. And if you can't find the right style for your song, you can go to the Yamaha musicsoft website, preview from the selection, purchase and transfer it to your keyboard (PC only).

Portable Grand: Industry's Best Piano
You're never more than a button push away from realistic piano sound in your portable keyboards. One press of the Portable Grand button resets the entire keyboard to a stereo-sampled piano — perfect for when it's time to practice. Yamaha is known around the world for the quality of our acoustic pianos and this attention to detail is evident as you enjoy the warmth and clarity of the YPG-235 Portable Grand piano. And, of course, the keyboard includes a Sustain Pedal jack on the back for practicing and playing piano pieces.

Yamaha YPG 235 keyboard

By Mary Ann Leatherwood from Covington, GA on 2/17/2011 12:38:53 PM

I bought this keyboard for my teenage daugher to learn on. She and I absolutely love it. It's very easy for her to use as a beginner and it's the perfect size. The manual is very easy to follow and the sound is very good. It's a great keyboard for the price. I hightly recommend it to anyone.

YPG 235 and YPT 320

By Doug Lewis from Columbus, Ohio on 2/15/2011 10:41:34 PM

I bought both of these instruments and love them. the YPG 235 is my lower keyboard that I use for piano and general organ music. The YPT 320 acts as my synthesizer as I have a guitar foot pedal attached and is my upper keyboard. Both are formidable in concert and really impress the concert attendees. I have been using the 320 for about a year and just added the 235 for our last concert...both are very durable and have terrific sound with numerous options. I rate both products 5 stars and plan on purchasing additional keyboards...look out Keith Emerson!

Wonderful starter.

By Corinne from Newport News, Va on 3/4/2011 5:50:05 PM

This beautiful keyboard was given to me as a Christmas gift. Piano was always an instrument I had wanted to learn but never had the opportunity. So this year my husband and I made resolutions to lean an instrument. I am a beginner if you can even give me that much credit but I couldn't have asked for a better starter keyboard. It has weighted keys so I can learn dynamics properly. It comes with an optional fut pedal for other learning purposes. And to me when in use feels like a general stand up piano. It comes with many features that as a student I have yet to venture in, but find them a great perk indeed. The price for this keyboard I feel is very fair compared to many others I have seen with as many keys but not as many extras with it. My opinion, straight and to the point. Well worth it. A wonderful gift, I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the piano.

JUMP !

By Neal from Roanoke,Va. on 3/19/2011 9:22:48 PM

I've been forcing keyboard players to drag their own boards to my project studio for about 9 years now, since the last one quit, waiting for just the right keyboard deal to come along, and this was it ! Just won't beat this deal any time in the next decade, and since you were smart enough to check this board out,I'll go ahead and save ya some leg-work. The "headphone/output" jack puts out a standard "line-level" signal, that you can play through just about anything with a plug on it.. ok. Probably won't play through your vacuum cleaner, but to play your new board through a PA system, or a pair of guitar or keyboard amps, in stereo, google Hosa YPP117. You'll know what to do from there. If you're more of a stay-at-home player, google Hosa TRS203. This adaptor has RCA connections and will get your music out of the back of your board, and let you hear yourself through your home stereo system, which just might be a LOT better than the on-board system. Just plug into any un-used or "AUX" inputs on your amp or receiver. (analog RCA connections are the red and white ones )Cable not long enough? There are plenty of extension cables out there that you can use with this kind of adaptor. Try Radio Shack, or do a search on Amazon. [See? I DON't work for Hosa. :)] Start with the board's volume turned all the way down, bring your stereo's volume up to a reasonable level, (about 1 o'clock) and then bring up the volume on the board, to taste. voila! Instant goose-bumps !! [You're not a real musician until the neighbors call the cops ! :O :)] No kiddin'. The YPG-235 is the perfect keyboard for beginners and cheapskates like me. GET one, and Enjoy ! Neal Wallace owner/operator Cheapskate Records

Excellent starter keyboard!

By Chris "KC" Anderson from Cherry Hill, NJ on 2/17/2011 1:22:47 PM

My 2 cents, I'm 43 and entered my mid-life crisis by getting into a band. Purchased this keyboard for a few reasons...price, options, and it felt a little bit more like a piano than other starter keyboards. Now that I've had it 3 years, I can say the following: -PERFECT for what I needed! -Price was great to invest in (more at the time) to make sure I was going to commit to playing again after a 20+ year hiatus. -GREAT options! Sounds are very good and great selection! I'm at the point now where I'm splitting and doubling/tripling sounds for effect now and I am still always learing of more features of this board. -Feel is pretty good. Not quite piano feel, but in between super cheap boards and piano. I'm very happy with this keyboard and because of the great success I've had & features of the board, I'll probably sell this (or keep it as a 2nd) and step up to the 635 or so when I'm ready.
