This album marks the beginning of "Nina Simone, the Civil Rights singer" in her recording career. Included on the album are politically laden songs, most notably the self-written "Mississippi Goddam," released as a single at the time. Nina Simone was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist who worked in a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Simone's musical style fused gospel and pop with classical music, in particular Johann Sebastian Bach, and accompanied expressive, jazz-like singing in her contralto voice.;Track List:1. I Loves You Porgy;2. Plain Gold Ring;3. Pirate Jenny;4. Old Jim Crow;5. Don't Smoke in Bed;6. Go Limp;7. Mississippi Goddam
