About the Trumpet

The trumpet is one of the most popular brass instruments in the world, with a sound that is instantly recognizable. Its powerful, penetrating timbre has made it a staple in a wide variety of ensembles, from orchestras and concert bands to marching bands, jazz ensembles, R&B and rock groups and more. As the highest-pitched brass instrument, the trumpet is often the lead melodic voice in the ensemble, thanks to its volume, clarity and commanding resonance.

At Music & Arts, musicians of all ages and skill levels can explore a wide selection of trumpets for sale from top brands.

How Do You Play the Trumpet?

Like all brass instruments, the trumpet produces sound when the player blows air through vibrating lips into a mouthpiece. This creates a buzzing sound, and by pressing and releasing the three valves, players change the length of the tubing to produce different pitches. Other main parts of a trumpet include the leadpipe (where the mouthpiece is inserted), the main tuning slide (which raises and lowers the instrument’s pitch) and the bell (where the sound emerges).

What Materials Are Trumpets Made From?

Different types of metals will influence the sound of a trumpet. Yellow brass is the industry standard and delivers a cutting tone; gold brass is preferred for its full sound and excellent projection; and red brass delivers a mellow tone while also being used for the leadpipe on student models. Other common metals for trumpets are nickel silver (mainly for slides) and sterling silver (a favored metal for bells).

Whether a player goes with a lacquered or silver-plated finish will come down to personal taste. Many pros believe that silver-plated trumpets have a brighter sound compared to the darker tone of trumpets with lacquered finishes. Ultimately, however, passion and technique shape a player’s sound.

What Are the Different Types of Trumpets?

There are several types of trumpets and related instruments, with the Bb trumpet being the most common. This is the standard trumpet used in school concert bands, marching bands, jazz ensembles, R&B bands and many other settings. The C trumpet is often used by advanced players in orchestras and other classical ensembles. Other members of the trumpet family include specialized instruments such as the Eb and D trumpets, the piccolo trumpet, the bass trumpet and the pocket trumpet, a compact variation of the Bb trumpet. Instruments closely related to the trumpet include the cornet and the flugelhorn.
