Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive

Submitted 14 years ago

By Rick Rice

From Buffalo, NY

the Boss SD-1 is the best Overdrive value on the market! The SD-1's circuit is very similar to that of a vintage Tube Screamer, except for the addition of an additional diode in the clipping section. The resulting asymmetrical wave pattern produced a deeper, richer bass response than the Tube Screamer's symmetrical clipping section. The SD-1's sound is also less focused in the mid-range frequencies than the Tube Screamer and is not as smooth. The stock SD-1 produces a classic overdrive sound in it's own right. However, you can also find numerous DIY modification on the web that will allow you to turn your SD-1 into a "boutique" pedal for just a few dollars and a couple of hours time. I performed a mod to improve the bypass mode, as well as added a switch that allows me to toggle between symmetric and asymmetric clipping. I also switched out a few components to improve bass response, increase the amount of available overdrive, and also provide more clean headroom.

Great Pedal!

This pedal gives great tone without too much noise or useless sounds. Add a little compression and delay and you could rock like Edge. Sounds great through any Fender guitar I've played it through.
