A cult classic, reborn.

First introduced in 1977, the RD—short for “Research and Development”—marked a bold departure from Gibson tradition, combining classic mahogany construction with an extended scale length and a space-age silhouette inspired by the angular lines of the Explorer and Firebird. Now, this rare cult classic returns with the Epiphone Futura RD Custom, reimagined with a modern, player-focused feature set. Part of the Futura Series, it pairs a solid mahogany body with a longer 25.5” scale length for increased clarity, tighter low-end response and improved performance in down-tuned applications. Epiphone’s all-new ProBucker Ignite humbuckers deliver punch and articulation, while coil splitting and phase switching offer expansive tonal range. A compound-radius ebony fingerboard with stainless steel frets ensures smooth, precise playability, and locking hardware keeps everything stable and stage-ready. Available in two shimmering Chromashift finishes—Midnight Ember Shift and Twilight Shift—it’s a distinctive evolution of one of Gibson’s most forward-thinking designs.

Mahogany Body for Warmth and Sustain

The Futura RD Custom’s solid mahogany body provides a thick, resonant tonal foundation with strong midrange presence and controlled low-end response. This construction delivers the warmth and sustain associated with classic Gibson designs, while maintaining clarity under higher gain. The sculpted body and contoured back improve comfort and balance, making the guitar feel stable and responsive whether seated or on a strap. The result is a tone that remains full and grounded, yet defined enough to cut through dense mixes.

Modern C Mahogany Neck With Extended 25.5” Scale

A key element of the RD design is its extended 25.5” scale length, which increases string tension and enhances note definition across the fretboard. This results in a tighter low-end response and added clarity, particularly beneficial for alternate tunings and more aggressive playing styles. The mahogany neck’s Modern C profile offers a fast, comfortable feel, while the ebony fingerboard adds snap and articulation. A 10–14” compound radius supports smooth chord work near the nut and effortless bending higher up the neck, creating a playing experience that feels precise and controlled.

ProBucker Ignite Pickups, Coil Splitting and Phase Switching for Tonal Range

The ProBucker Ignite humbuckers deliver a powerful, articulate voice with tight lows, focused mids and clear highs. Their output is well-suited for both clean and driven tones, maintaining clarity without losing weight. Push/pull controls allow you to split the coils for brighter, more focused tones or engage phase switching for thinner, cutting textures that sit differently in a mix. This expanded control layout gives the RD Custom a wide tonal range, making it adaptable across genres and playing styles.

LockTone Hardware and Custom-Level Appointments

The LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece provide solid intonation and sustain, ensuring consistent performance under demanding conditions. Locking Grover Rotomatic tuners offer precise tuning and quick string changes, while a Graph Tech nut enhances tuning stability and resonance. Multi-ply binding and mother-of-pearl headstock inlays bring a refined, Custom-inspired aesthetic, complementing the guitar’s distinctive silhouette with a more elevated visual identity.

The Return of a Cult-Classic Electric Guitar

The Epiphone Futura RD Custom carries forward the spirit of a legendary design, bringing the RD’s distinctive long-scale feel and offset form into a modern, player-focused context. By pairing classic mahogany construction with contemporary electronics, refined playability and reliable hardware, it expands the RD’s original concept into something more versatile and performance-ready. The result is an instrument that honors its experimental roots while delivering a clear, articulate voice and a playing experience built for today’s demands.
