Dark lo-fi reverb meets vintage-style phasing and distorted textures.

Dark, lo-fi reverb meets vintage-style phasing in the JHS 3 Series Pherb phaser and reverb pedal, an unconventional effect that combines atmospheric textures with swirling modulation. Developed from concept to approved prototype in just 35 hours, the Pherb is the fastest-developed pedal in JHS history. Its reverb and phaser operate together in a fixed signal order, with Mix, Speed and Length controls shaping the combined effect. A BREAK toggle introduces asymmetric bitcrushing and analog-style clipping before the reverb and phaser, adding distorted textures to the incoming signal. From slow-moving ambient layers to fractured riffs, the Pherb offers an unusual combination of modulation, space and lo-fi distortion in a single pedal.

Dark Lo-Fi Reverb Meets Four-Stage Phasing

The reverb has a dark, chorused character rather than a conventional room, hall or plate sound, with longer decays developing a subtle pulse. Its four-stage phaser features a vintage-style sweep without feedback and higher-positioned notches that preserve more of the reverb's low-mid content beneath the modulation. Phaser speed ranges from 0.05Hz to 5Hz, covering gradual sweeps through faster modulation. The fixed signal order allows the reverb and phaser to function as a combined effect rather than two independently switchable pedals.

Mix, Speed and Length Shape the Effects

Mix adjusts the level of the combined reverb and phaser effect, while Speed controls the phase sweep. Turning Speed fully counterclockwise in normal mode disengages the phaser, allowing the reverb to operate independently. Length adjusts reverb decay and pre-delay together, with longer settings extending the tail and emphasizing the modulation. The reverb decay range spans 241 ms to 49.83 seconds, accommodating everything from short atmospheric accents to extended ambient textures.

BREAK Mode Adds Bitcrushing and Analog-Style Clipping

Engaging BREAK introduces asymmetric bitcrushing and analog-style clipping to the incoming guitar signal before it reaches the reverb and phaser. In this mode, the phaser remains engaged even when Speed is fully counterclockwise. Standard 1/4" input and output jacks support integration with conventional pedalboard setups, while the combined effects can be placed at different points in the signal chain. The Pherb operates on 9V DC center-negative power, drawing 70 mA, and must not be powered at higher voltages. Its combination of dark reverb, vintage-style phasing and distorted textures makes it suited to ambient, shoegaze and experimental guitar applications.
