Music & Arts offers violin lessons for kids, teens and adults. Whatever your age or musical goals, the violin is a perfect instrument for fun and self-expression. From students finding their way in the school orchestra, to those pursuing advanced classical studies, to bluegrass fans looking to master the fiddle, our versatile teachers and customized lessons inspire every musician.

Learning to play an instrument supports cognitive development and improves mental health, and our teachers prioritize making lessons a comfortable, enjoyable and enriching experience. Add the joy of music to your life with violin lessons from Music & Arts.

Is There a Minimum Age to Learn Violin?

All children are different. They grow and develop at different rates and have different aptitudes. Generally speaking, however, we recommend a minimum starting age of 5 for violin students. Your child should be old enough to comfortably lift and hold a fractional-size violin, and focus throughout a 30-minute music lesson.

We encourage you to stop by your local Music & Arts to speak with our violin teachers or store associates. They'll help your child find the correct instrument size and determine if it's a good time to join our lessons program. They can also help you rent a violin, which allows parents to trade up to larger instruments as their child grows.

Ages 7 and up recommended for beginning saxophonists

As for the maximum age to begin violin lessons … there's no limit! We invite anyone interested in playing music to visit their local Music & Arts and try out an instrument.

What Do Parents & Students Think of Violin Lessons at Music & Arts?

Misty S. — Parent

Emanuel Little is a great teacher who knows music inside out. He doesn't mind answering questions — I always have a lot of questions — even when our time is almost up. I can't think of a better violinist to be my teacher!”

Kathryn S. — Student

“My daughter enjoys going to violin lessons and has improved immensely under the guidance of Diane Coffin. We appreciate her so much because violin isn't taught at her school, and great teachers are hard to find.”

Violin Lessons FAQ

Why learn to play violin?

Think about your favorite performance by a symphony orchestra. What do you remember about it? Chances are it's the soaring melodies carried by the violins. Considered by many to be the most important instrument in the orchestra, the violin is also the most prevalent, providing the melody, harmony and texture that give the orchestra its sweeping, heart-filling effect. It's also an integral player in chamber ensembles (most notably the string quartet), a fantastic solo instrument, and has helped define nonclassical genres like folk, bluegrass and traditional country.

The violin also ranks among the most popular instruments in school music programs, where kids react enthusiastically to the clarity, strength and emotion of its sound. Lightweight and compact, it's easy for young learners to transport. And because it's so common in the orchestra, student violinists have more opportunities to participate and perform.

How long does it take to learn the violin?

No two musicians learn the same way, so there's no set timeline for advancement on the violin. How quickly you advance depends largely on how much you practice. That said, plenty of enthusiastic new learners make steady progress quickly, and are able to play short melodies and scales within weeks of their first lesson — sometimes within days!

How much do violin lessons cost?

Violin lessons at Music & Arts are affordable, averaging just $37 for a private half-hour lesson with a professional teacher and $67 for a full hour. Prices vary by store location and individual teacher.

For new students, we offer a free trial lesson with no purchase necessary. It's the ideal way to discover how our lessons can help you play the music you love.

Can violin lessons help with school band or orchestra auditions?

Of course! With our personalized lessons, student musicians can collaborate with their teacher to build a comprehensive plan for audition day. Are you striving for that concertmaster chair? Let us help.

Is paying for violin lessons worth it?

Why should you pay for violin lessons when there is so much free instructional content available online? Simply put, because there is no substitute for in-person lessons with a vetted professional teacher. The mentorship that occurs in a Music & Arts lesson studio cannot be replicated through an online video clip, an app or even via Zoom.

To start, in-person lessons allow our expert teachers to customize a plan just for you. Because no two musicians have the same gifts and tastes, online tutorials can never offer the same level of care and precision as our tailored in-person lessons. Taking regular weekly lessons with an experienced teacher also gives you motivation to practice. After every lesson, you'll have new techniques, melodies and ideas to hone. At the next lesson, you'll perform what you've learned for your teacher, who will provide constructive, thoughtful feedback. This weekly guidance will accelerate your progression while offering the personal satisfaction that comes with gaining new skills.

An in-person professional teacher can observe your technique with unmatched clarity, and will know instantly if your hand position or posture needs improvement, your rhythm is off, or you're misinterpreting dynamic markings in a piece. When it comes to helping you improve your playing and build your musical knowledge, face-to-face communication with your teacher is far more effective and efficient than screens. During your lesson, a private teacher will also help you maintain focus — free of common at-home distractions ranging from pets to internet hiccups.

Finally, lessons at Music & Arts allow you to feel the joy of genuine mentorship. Again and again, researchers have proven that in-person activities like music lessons relieve stress, boost mood and improve self-esteem. Music & Arts teachers often become beloved figures in their students' lives. Their encouragement creates self-confidence that stays with their students, regardless of the paths or interests they choose to follow later on.

Do violin lessons cover both classical and more contemporary music styles?

Certainly! Our versatile teachers understand how the violin has made a huge impact on musical genres far beyond the conservatory. Folk, bluegrass, country, blues, jazz, even rock and pop — whatever style you want to master, we'll get you there.

How do I sign up for violin lessons?

Joining our nationwide lessons program is easy. Sign up online or visit your neighborhood Music & Arts store.

Does Music & Arts offer music lessons for instruments other than the violin?

Absolutely! Piano, guitar, clarinet, trumpet — Music & Arts offers private lessons for more than 20 instruments. Explore our Lessons page or stop by your local Music & Arts to start learning and playing.
