A granular synthesis pedal for evolving pads, rhythmic glitches and layered sound design.

The MXR Textures Granular Synth Engine pedal transforms incoming audio into shimmering pads, glitchy rhythms, reversed fragments and evolving soundscapes through granular synthesis. Rather than replaying a signal as a conventional delay would, the pedal divides recorded audio into small snippets called grains, then reshapes their length, density, pitch, direction and movement. Eight presets provide immediate access to sounds ranging from regenerative octave loops and lush polyphonic synth textures to sub-octave pads and stuttering effects. Three capture modes, seven primary controls, onboard reverb, filtering and vibrato, stereo routing and expression support give guitarists and sound designers a deep but approachable platform for ambient, post-rock, shoegaze, experimental music and cinematic scoring.

Three Capture Modes Shape How Grains Evolve

Delay, Auto-Freeze and Layers modes determine how the Textures pedal records and replays an instrument signal. Delay mode continuously divides notes and chords into grains, producing everything from clean repeats and smeared trails to pitch-shifted echoes. Auto-Freeze listens for incoming audio, captures it and sustains the material as an evolving wash that can sit beneath new playing. Layers mode records up to four notes or chords into independent buffers, each with its own fade-in and fade-out shape, allowing players to stack harmonies, assemble polyphonic pads and build layered arrangements directly from the pedalboard.

Seven Controls Sculpt Every Granular Detail

Size and Overlap determine the duration and density of the grains, while Pitch and Reverse control playback speed, direction and harmonic movement. Time and Regen shape how the processed fragments move through time and feed back into the effect, and Mix ranges from an unaffected instrument signal to a fully granular output. Holding the Reverse or mode button while turning a control unlocks additional parameters such as randomization, tap tempo, reverb, filtering and vibrato for deeper sound shaping. This layered control system allows players to begin with a preset and gradually reshape it into a personalized texture through the pedal’s hands-on controls.

Stereo Routing and Expression Expand Performance Control

Full stereo input and output support allows the Textures Granular Synth Engine to operate in mono, wet/dry or true stereo configurations for pedalboards, recording setups and expansive live rigs. An expression pedal can morph continuously between heel and toe states, while the optional MXR Split + Tap provides hands-free preset scrolling, tempo tapping and freeze control. Whether used to place ambient movement beneath a riff, create rhythmic glitches around a lead line or build evolving material for film and sound design, the MXR Textures Granular Synth Engine pedal gives creative players a flexible granular sandbox that can move from immediate preset inspiration to detailed sonic experimentation.
