Excellent Starter Guitar
I have purchased a number of Yamaha guitars during my 30 years of teaching classroom music. I was pleasantly surprised when I picked up this "gem" and began playing some classical passages.... The sound is clear and has a beautiful, sweet tone quality. For the price, you just can't go wrong. I hav...

Classical Guitar
The guitar size was a little smaller than I expected; however, I obviously missed the measurement differences during my search. The guitar was for my son, who is in band and plays percussion. He is following online courses to learn the guitar. It has been a good purchase.

Just purchased for my classroom because after 10 years, the other guitars were in bad shape. These are excellent for use with many students. Good quality for the price.
These guitars are great for beginners!
I have bought these guitars for my middle school guitar class and they have a great sound and are easy to play.
Great quality for the price!
PROS: - They sound GREAT as an acoustic sound. - They can get your students to get the fundamentals down on a neck larger than they normally would play. - They don't have a bad "glare" on stage with stage lights (they are lacquered) CON: - They are not the ideal thing to teach modern guitar on but they do work. - Even with gig bags, they tend to wear out rather quickly (both scratches and dents). I've had a few just completely wear out at the binding on the bottom. - It is EXTREMELY hard to repair them if they get a hole or any kind of puncture. - Mic'ing in a live situation is very hard to get right. Even trying to both dynamic (SM57, AKG-PS3) and Condensing (Blue EnCore 200, AKG-C411). It's doable but they are very touchy and hard to balance at times.
C40 Gigmaker Package
To the first time guitar buyer I say: If your interest is in country, folk or any contemporary music you would be better served by one of Yamaha's steel stringed acoustic guitars. My string action gauge tells me that right out of the box the guitar was set up close to perfect. There is marginal room for improvement in both the string action at the bridge and the intonation. In my opinion it is so close that it isn't worth paying a luthier even a modest fee to the make adjustments. Just to make it clear, string action at the nut and relief in the neck were perfect. I'd have liked to have seen more fret marks than just the one for the 7th fret on the side of the neck. In the long run it is irrelevant. Other than that fit, finish, tone, and playability are all one could ask for. The Gigmaker Package is a very cost effective purchase. The gig bag is very nice, though I bought a hard case as getting the guitar in and out of the bag is cumbersome and in daily use repeated in and out of the bag will likely result in scratching the finish or snagging a string on the zipper. The DVD is a valuable learning resource and introduction to guitar inspite of not at all having anything directly related to classical guitars. It is much better suited for acoustic and electric. The tuner is functional and comes with the plus that it tells you which E, A, D, G, or B you're tuning too, but I don't use it because the spring for the clamp is irritatingly stiff when I go to mount it on the headstock. I keep it as a spare. All and all a great value and a good guitar. I'd give the guitar 4.9 stars and the package 4.5 stars.
