What Is the Bass Guitar?

The bass guitar is a foundational instrument in rock, pop, R&B, metal, reggae, funk, jazz fusion and many other styles of contemporary music, where it grounds the harmony and drives the groove. Standard bass guitars feature four strings tuned E-A-D-G, matching the lowest four strings of a standard guitar but pitched one octave lower. Extended-range bass guitars with additional strings are common.

History of the Bass Guitar

In the 1950s, the Fender electric bass was introduced to the commercial market as a modern, more manageable alternative to the acoustic upright bass, and over the next couple of decades it transformed the sound of pop and rock music. While many early electric bass players were confined to fundamental low-end roles, musicians such as Monk Montgomery, James Jamerson and Carol Kaye demonstrated the instrument’s rich melodic and rhythmic potential. Over time, the bass evolved into a virtuoso’s instrument, incorporating dazzling percussive techniques such as slap bass, popularized by players like Larry Graham.

Whether you’re a beginner learning your first bass lines or an experienced player looking to upgrade your sound, Music & Arts offers a wide selection of bass guitars.

Types of Bass Guitars

Bass guitars come in a wide variety of different types and models for different styles and sounds.

  • Electric basses are the most common, offering a wide variety of tones for rock, pop, funk, jazz and more.
  • Acoustic and acoustic-electric bass guitars deliver a crisp, natural tone for unplugged sessions.
  • Fretless bass guitars have a smooth neck that resembles that of an acoustic upright bass, allowing the player to move between notes with more fluidity. Because of the lack of metal frets, fretless basses have a warmer, more expressive sound that is instantly identifiable.
  • Short-scale basses have a shorter scale length (the distance between the nut and the bridge) and less string tension, which makes them easier to play for many beginners, musicians with smaller hands, or guitarists who want to double on bass. Still, many accomplished professional bass guitarists have preferred the feel of a short-scale instrument.

Bass Guitar String Configurations

The standard bass guitar has four strings, tuned E–A–D–G, one octave below the corresponding strings on a regular guitar in standard tuning. Five-string basses generally add a low B string. Six-string basses bookend the standard four-string bass with additional strings, resulting in the tuning B–E–A–D–G–C.

Extended-range bass guitars tend to be used by players who need more low end and employ advanced techniques, often working in demanding genres like jazz fusion, metal, progressive rock, contemporary R&B and more.
