What are the key things to consider when buying a beginner cello?

If you’re brand new to the cello, focus on asking these key questions as you shop:

Build Quality: What materials are used? Look for cellos crafted with woods like spruce for the top and maple for the back, sides and neck. In beginner instruments, this wood will often be “laminated,” or layered and bonded together by adhesive, rather than carved from a solid piece — and that’s OK; laminate is a durable, affordable option common in entry-level instruments. The fingerboard is best crafted from a dense hardwood such as ebony.
Comfort & Sizing: Are you sure you have the right size of cello? How does the cello feel in playing position? While seated toward the edge of a chair, hold the instrument upright at a slight angle and rest it against your upper chest, with your knees gently gripping the sides. Is it comfortable and easy enough to manage?
