Though you’ll hear the terms “baritone,” or “baritone horn,” and “euphonium” used interchangeably, they are in fact different instruments — most notably, the interior of each instrument’s tubing, or “bore,” is shaped differently, giving the euphonium a darker, richer, creamier tone. Both instruments also have versions for marching band, which are redesigned for better projection and agile handling on the field.

How Do You Play the Baritone and Euphonium?

To play the baritone and euphonium, the musician buzzes their lips into a mouthpiece to create vibration and sound. With their right hand, they press down on valves that change the length of the instrument’s tubing and, consequently, its pitch. Further refinement of tone, pitch and attack are achieved through the embouchure, or the combination of a player’s lips, tongue, teeth and the muscles around the mouth.
