Personalized Trumpet Lessons From Music & Arts

Music & Arts offers trumpet lessons for kids, teens and adults. Whatever your age, the trumpet is a perfect instrument for fun and self-expression. Our versatile teachers and custom lesson plans inspire every musician, from young students who want to excel in concert band to advanced players pursuing jazz and classical studies.

Learning to play an instrument also supports cognitive development and improves mental health, and our teachers prioritize making lessons a comfortable, enjoyable and enriching experience. Add the joy of music to your life with trumpet lessons from Music & Arts.

Is There a Minimum Age to Learn Trumpet?

Every child develops at their own pace, with unique strengths and timelines. Generally speaking, however, we recommend a minimum starting age of 8 for trumpet students.

Children should begin trumpet lessons when they can comfortably hold the instrument, press the valves, demonstrate consistent breath support and maintain focus throughout a 30-minute session. For younger students, we'll sometimes suggest they begin on the cornet — a more compact trumpet-like instrument that can be easier for children to maneuver.

We encourage parents and children to visit their local Music & Arts store to speak with our trumpet instructors or associates. They can help you determine if your child is ready for lessons.

Ages 7 and up recommended for beginning trumpeters

As for the maximum age to begin trumpet lessons … there's no limit! We invite anyone interested in playing music to visit their local Music & Arts and try out an instrument.

Trumpet Lessons FAQ

Why learn to play trumpet?

Loud and powerful as well as deeply expressive, the trumpet boasts an unforgettable sound that cuts through the blend of any ensemble. Moreover, the trumpet can maintain its clarity and intensity whether it's playing a flurry of notes or a slow, sensitive ballad. For its clarion tone and impressive versatility, the trumpet often receives the premier melody parts and the breathtaking solos in ensembles.

The trumpet is perfect for ambitious young learners who love to shine! It's also one of the most prevalent instruments in concert bands, marching bands and jazz bands, offering children plenty of opportunities to participate.

How difficult is it to learn the trumpet compared to other instruments?

Trumpet performance can be challenging, with an added element of physicality that other instruments might not require. Players will need to develop good posture, solid breath support and a consistent, controlled embouchure (meaning the coordination between the lips, teeth, tongue and the muscles around the mouth). Trumpeters need to practice regularly to maintain their “chops,” or technical skills, and be mindful of changes to their embouchure that can dramatically affect their performance — such as mouth trauma or orthodontics.

All that said, dedicated trumpeters are rewarded handsomely for their efforts, in the form of glorious melody parts and high-profile solos.

What kinds of bands feature the trumpet?

The trumpet is a staple of concert bands, jazz bands, wind ensembles, marching bands, funk and R&B bands, pop and rock horn sections and many other settings. It's played with striking tone and masterful precision in the world's great symphony orchestras, and has been the instrument of choice for countless jazz giants. In fact, some of the most innovative figures in music history, like Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, were jazz trumpeters.

How long does it take to learn the trumpet?

No two musicians learn the same way, so there's no set timeline for progress on the trumpet. How quickly you advance depends largely on how much you practice.

How much do trumpet lessons cost?

Trumpet lessons at Music & Arts are affordable, averaging just $37 for a private half-hour lesson with a professional teacher and $67 for a full hour. Prices vary by store location and individual teacher.

For new students, we offer a free trial lesson with no purchase necessary. It's the ideal way to discover how our lessons can help you reach your musical goals.

Is paying for trumpet lessons worth it?

Why should you pay for trumpet lessons when there is so much free instructional content available online? Simply put, because there is no substitute for in-person lessons with a vetted professional teacher. The mentorship that occurs in a Music & Arts lesson studio cannot be replicated through an online video clip, an app or even via Zoom.

To start, in-person lessons allow our expert teachers to customize a plan just for you. Because no two musicians have the same gifts and tastes, online tutorials can never offer the same level of care and precision as our tailored in-person lessons. Taking regular weekly lessons with an experienced teacher also gives you motivation to practice. After every lesson, you'll have new techniques, scales, melodies and ideas to hone. At the next lesson, you'll perform what you've learned for your teacher, who will provide constructive, thoughtful feedback. This weekly guidance will accelerate your progression while offering the personal satisfaction that comes with gaining new skills.

An in-person professional teacher can observe your technique with unmatched clarity, and will know instantly if your embouchure needs work, your rhythm is off or you're misinterpreting dynamic markings in a piece. When it comes to helping you improve your playing and build your musical knowledge, face-to-face communication with your teacher is far more effective and efficient than screens. During your lesson, a private teacher will also help you maintain focus — free of common at-home distractions ranging from pets to internet hiccups.

Finally, lessons at Music & Arts allow you to feel the joy of in-person mentorship. Again and again, researchers have proven that in-person activities like music lessons relieve stress, boost mood and improve self-esteem. Music & Arts teachers often become beloved figures in their students' lives. Their encouragement helps build self-confidence that stays with their students, regardless of the paths or interests they choose to follow later on.

What else do I need to play the trumpet besides the instrument?

Trumpet students will need a few essential accessories on hand. The Giardinelli Trumpet Starter Pack is a budget-friendly, all-in-one kit that includes key products like valve oil and tuning-slide grease. A streamlined Giardinelli Trumpet Care Kit is also available.

How do I sign up for trumpet lessons?

Joining our nationwide lessons program is easy. Sign up online or visit your neighborhood Music & Arts store.

Does Music & Arts offer lessons for instruments other than the trumpet?

Absolutely! Piano, guitar, clarinet, violin — Music & Arts offers private lessons for more than 20 instruments. Explore our Lessons page or stop by your local Music & Arts to start learning and playing.
