A compact tube head inspired by a legendary amp from Hendrix's collection.

Inspired by a legendary amp from Jimi Hendrix’s personal collection, the PRS HDRX 20 captures the power, articulation and harmonic aggression of late-’60s British tube tone in a more compact, controllable format. In 2018, Paul Reed Smith and PRS amp designer Doug Sewell were able to study one of Hendrix’s touring amps—purportedly the one used at Woodstock—and the HDRX series is their tribute to that historic circuit design. The HDRX 20 distills that vintage-inspired voice into a compact platform that delivers bright, expressive top end, tight low-end response and dynamic breakup that remains clear and musical even at higher gain settings. Internally bridged channels, a master volume control and lower-wattage 5881 power tubes give players easier access to classic British-style saturation without the punishing volume levels associated with vintage high-powered amps. Compact, touch-sensitive and highly responsive, the HDRX 20 blends historic tonal character with thoughtful modern refinements built for today’s studio and stage environments.

Authentic Hendrix-Inspired Circuit With Blendable Channel Control

At the core of the HDRX 20 is a circuit heavily inspired by the interactive channel architecture found in the late-’60s British amplifiers favored by Jimi Hendrix. Rather than using completely separate channels, the HDRX 20 is designed around blendable lead and bass channels that shape both gain structure and tonal character. Historically, players would jumper these channels externally to combine their voices and unlock a wider range of tones. The HDRX 20 modernizes that concept with internally bridged channels and independent volume controls, eliminating the need for patch cables while preserving the dynamic feel and harmonic complexity of the original design. From cleaner edge-of-breakup textures to thick, harmonically rich overdrive, the amp responds with exceptional clarity, tight low-end definition and highly expressive pick sensitivity throughout its gain range.

Classic British Tone Shaping With Modern Control

A shared three-band TMB tone stack gives players detailed control over the amp’s overall voice, while the presence control shapes upper-frequency response and feel. A two-way bright switch adds extra high-end snap and articulation without becoming harsh, while the high-mid gain switch pushes the amp into more aggressive, harmonically rich territory when needed. Unlike many traditional vintage-inspired circuits, the HDRX 20 also includes a master volume control, allowing players to drive the preamp and power section more effectively at lower volume levels for increased flexibility in studio, rehearsal and smaller live environments.

5881 Power Tubes for Organic Breakup and Responsive Feel

Powered by a pair of 5881 power tubes and three 12AX7/ECC83 preamp tubes, the HDRX 20 delivers a thick yet articulate voice with smooth compression and highly responsive touch sensitivity. Chosen specifically for their lower power handling and organic character, the 5881 tubes allow the amp to reach rich, musical breakup at more manageable volume levels while retaining focused attack and tight low end. Accessible bias monitoring jacks and adjustment controls simplify tube maintenance and servicing, while multiple speaker outputs support a range of cabinet configurations for different studio and live setups. The result is an amp that feels equally comfortable in rehearsal rooms, recording sessions and performance environments alike.

The HDRX 20: Legendary British Character With Modern Playability

The PRS HDRX 20 delivers the expressive feel, harmonic complexity and dynamic response of classic late-’60s British tube amps in a more approachable, player-friendly format. From its Hendrix-inspired circuit and blendable channel design to its responsive 5881 tube platform and practical master volume control, every aspect of the amp is built to preserve vintage character while improving real-world usability. Rich, articulate and exceptionally touch-sensitive, the HDRX 20 captures the spirit of a classic era of amplification without feeling locked in the past.
