What Is the French Horn?

The French horn — which technically originated in Germany — is a brass instrument whose range bridges the gap between the low brass, like the tuba and trombone, and the high brass, such as the trumpet. The instrument has a distinctive and memorable appearance defined by its large funnel-shaped bell, series of valves, and long stretch of intricately coiled brass tubing.

Renowned for its versatility, the French horn plays both melodic and harmonic roles and is a staple in symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles and concert or wind bands. Its sound is often described as mellow, warm and rich.

How Do You Play the French Horn?

To produce sound on the French horn, the player buzzes their lips against the mouthpiece, sending vibrations through the instrument’s tubing and out of its bell. Using the left hand, the player presses the valves in various combinations to alter the length of the instrument’s tubing, which changes the pitch. The right hand is placed inside the bell to fine-tune the pitch, tone, intonation and other elements.

What Are the Different Types of French Horns?

There are three main types of French horns: the single horn, double horn and triple horn. The double horn is the most common and versatile model used today, suitable for players of various skill levels. The triple horn is typically favored by advanced or professional musicians, while the single horn is often recommended for beginners or younger students.

In a single horn, which uses much less brass tubing than the double or triple, three valves alter the airflow to produce different notes (most often in F). The double horn adds a thumb-operated fourth valve, allowing the player to switch between the F and Bb sides of the instrument, providing greater flexibility in tone and intonation.
