A step up from Fibracell

On alto using a Meyer 5, I normally play a #3 Fibracell. I tried the American cut in a 2.0 which produced a bright sound and a 2.5 to darken the sound for a more refined tone. The darkening effect at just a half strength increase was considerable and I felt going any higher in reed strength from the...

Venn 2.5 Not good for me.

The regular reeds at a soft or #2 always warp after about 2 sessions. Buying this Venn 2.5 was an experiment based hyped up ads on TV. My soft and medium Fiberreeds are the best I have found yet. I still try to play my assorted natural reeds with a little touching up of the Reed Geek just to break m...

The best reed I have ever played

This is a review for the American Cut 2.00 not the 3.75. I have found the 2.00 Legere American Cut alto sax reed to be the best reed I have ever played. It's just a tad stiffer than a 2.00 Signature reed and it took me a couple hours to get used to it. However, now that I have gotten used to it I love it. From the top of the range to the bottom the notes articulate clearly and have a bit more body than the Signature 2.00 reed which had been my reed of choice for over a year. I think it is definitely worth the money.

On alto using a Meyer 5, I normally play a #3 Fibracell. I tried the American cut in a 2.0 which produced a bright sound and a 2.5 to darken the sound for a more refined tone. The darkening effect at just a half strength increase was considerable and I felt going any higher in reed strength from there would be pressing the limits of my comfort level. Although my Meyer does not generally play very bright with the Fibracell it definitely brightens up with the American Cut Legere' almost as if I'm playing a piece with a high baffle. I've been using the reeds on soprano and Tenor also and really like their performance on soprano. I would start with a .25 to .5 step lower than the usual strength played in a cane reed on Alto.

American Cut - My favorite Legere Reeds

I appreciate the ease of using these reeds. No maintenance, no need to ensure they are "wet" enough to use, no rough / inconsistent wood feel on your lip, ready to play right out of the box and they last a long time. I probably buy two a year playing about 4-5 hours a week.

Venn 2.5 Not good for me.

The regular reeds at a soft or #2 always warp after about 2 sessions. Buying this Venn 2.5 was an experiment based hyped up ads on TV. My soft and medium Fiberreeds are the best I have found yet. I still try to play my assorted natural reeds with a little touching up of the Reed Geek just to break my chops a little. By far though the Fiberreed play easier with less effort for longer- I have one that I bought a year ago that works better than most natural reeds I have.

I recently purchased this reed for marching band. Within two weeks of blowing on this reed it was bent and chipped.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

American Cut - My favorite Legere Reeds

I play on synthetic reeds because I find them easier to play than cane reeds and they are always ready to go right out of the package. I've used some of Legere's original reeds (which might now be called Classic?) and found that playability between the same strength of reed varied from purchase to purchase. I have not found this to be a problem with the American Cut reeds I've been using.

Such a delight to play on a clarinet reed that doesn't change. It is like a flute head joint or a brass mouthpiece. Never does the reed dry out, warp, get too moist, change response, wear out (yet), or chip. Always has the same excellent response. Always feels the same in rehearsal as it does in performance. Awesome product. I have been using Legere for about 5 months. However, it is important to have a properly faced mouthpiece with the Legere reed.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Never having tried the American Cut, I decided to take the plunge and give it a try. In the past, while I liked the Signature better than any other synthetic, it didn't really do it for me. I typically play Rigotti Wild and BSS (2.5) on a Drake Contemporary alto mouthpiece. The Americal Cut (2.25) played and sounded almost identical, maybe better. With that, and the Legere reeds eliminating variability between reeds, I'm pretty sure I'm a convert.
