To amplify your music throughout any venue, your journey begins with a mixer. These units process signals from your instruments and vocals, allowing you to adjust volume, EQ (the balance of specific frequencies) and effects (such as delay and reverb). You should also secure a PA system, which projects your sound out to the audience. (Solo performers might only need a single speaker, while full bands typically require at least two.) However, you’ll need microphones for other channels — typically condenser microphones for vocals and drum overheads, and dynamic mics for snare, kick and guitar amps. From there, you can supplement your setup with studio headphones, monitors, pop filters (which help minimize unwanted “p” and “b” sounds, or “plosives”) and shock mounts.
